Check out the latest paper from the Fudge Lab on how hagfish slime clogs gills. This project was started at the University of Guelph by postdoc Atsuko Negishi and undergrad Andre Hupe, and involved a collaboration with Randy Ewoldt and his student Gaurav Chaudhary. The research continued after Dr. Fudge moved to Chapman University, where postdocs Gaurav Jain and Yu Zeng, technician Andrew Lowe, and undergrad Luke Taylor made major contributions. The paper shows that hagfish slime is incredibly good at clogging with very little material and explores the mechanisms involved in its superior clogging performance.
