Postdoctoral Fellows
We are always looking to support postdoctoral fellows in biology and STEM education research! We are able to support postdocs through two main mechanisms:
- Grand Challenges Initiative (GCI) Postdoctoral Program: Dr. Hsu is able to support
postdocs through the GCI program, a research and teaching postdoc program run through the Schmid College of Science and Technology and Fowler School of Engineering at Chapman. GCI Fellows can serve for up to three years and receive a competitive salary ($65,000 for 2023) and research stipend each year ($5000). The program is structured as 70% research and 30% teaching, where fellows teach within a interdisciplinary problem-based learning sequence for STEM majors. The application usually opens each year in November with a deadline in January or February; please see here for more information on the program and becoming a GCI Fellow. Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact Dr. Hsu [hsu at chapman dot edu] well in advance of the deadline.
- Grant funding: While we currently do not have any direct funding available to support postdocs beyond the GCI Fellowship (see above), we are always willing to collaborate with potential postdocs on grants. Similarly, if you have your own funding and wish to collaborate with the group, please reach out to Dr. Hsu [hsu at chapman dot edu].
Graduate Students
Chapman University does not have any graduate programs in biology or biology education research. However, students currently enrolled in the Ph.D. in Education through Chapman’s Attallah College of Educational StudiesĀ are encouraged to contact Dr. Hsu [hsu at chapman dot edu] if you are interested in collaborating on any projects. We may have resources available to support graduate research assistantships.
Undergraduates
Interested undergraduates are encouraged to contact Dr. Hsu – no previous research experience is necessary, and students of all class years and all majors are welcome! Please email Dr. Hsu [hsu at chapman dot edu] with a paragraph of why you are interested in joining to get the process started! If you have a copy of your resume or curriculum vitae, you are encouraged to include it in the email, though this is not a requirement. Students conducting research can earn academic credit through the 291/491 independent research program, which may also count for your major (e.g., these units will count toward biology major requirements).
Collaborators
We have multiple collaborators, both within and beyond Chapman University! We view collaboration as an essence part of science and education. Current collaborators hail from a diversity of institutions, and we are always open to new collaborations. If you have a potential project idea or collaboration, please do contact us [hsu at chapman dot edu]!
