How would you explain Italy to a child? Join us for the screening of “Sarà un paese” (2014) with director Nicola Campiotti in attendance

Wednesday, May 6th. 7:30-9:00pm. Argyros Forum 212.

Following the path of the Phoenician hero Cadmus, to whom mythology attributes the introduction of the alphabet into Greece, Nicola, a thirtysomething who is uncertain about the future, and his 10- year-old brother Elia, undertake a journey through Italy in search of a new language, to give back to things their proper names and restore meaning to words. In their wanderings, taking in faces and places, painful realities and historic memories, the road becomes a path of learning and, at the same time, an exploration of the imaginary. On the border between documentary and fiction, the film describes the hopes of the country that will be.

The great tradition of Italian puppetry visits Chapman University

This afternoon Dmitri Carter–from the renowned Carter Family Marionettes–gave a memorable and informative demonstration on Italian-style puppetry to an audience of children, students and adults. The presentation shed light on the technical “secrets” of this uniquely Italian tradition, as well as on its rich cultural background. The puppets showcased included: the Neapolitan Pulcinella glove-puppet, string marionettes of Pinocchio and Arlecchino, and the Sicilian pupi from Catania and Palermo.

Marrying scholarship and teaching: the puppet metaphor, Italy and beyond

The intense intellectual exchanges occurred within the Puppet Metaphor CRASsH group for the last two years have led to the designing of an honors course being taught by Federico Pacchioni (Italian Studies) this semester and titled “The Puppet Metaphor Across Media”. The course curriculum, which investigates the theoretical and historical significance of the myth of the puppet by examining its cultural history and its life across media boundaries, is significantly enriched by the discussions that took place within the group during the last two years. During the semester, CRASsH group members engage directly with the students in the form of interactive seminars as in the case of Georgia Panteli (University College London) addressing postmodern retellings of Pinocchio and Pia Banzhaf (Queen’s University Kingston) exploring the ontology of the puppet.

Since its inception, the Puppet Metaphor group, which also includes Wendy Salmon (Art History), Polly Hodge (Spanish) and Martin Valle (Spanish), has held served as an opportunity to discuss and refine the members’ works in progress, stimulating and enriching several conference presentations and publications.

“Vieni qui insieme a noi,” a surprise musical celebration at La Serata

There was singing and dancing at last week’s La Serata, with Italian students performing ABBA songs in Italian under the guidance of professor Francesca Paduano. The show continued in the second part of the evening, when everyone did their part in translating and singing a popular Disney song in Italian.

Music will remain the common theme of La Serata this semester, as singers Rosario Monetti and Giovanna Gattuso will provide educational entertainment at our upcoming April and May evenings.

Dr. Pacchioni leads Q&A session after the screening of La scelta di Catia in San Juan Capistrano

Last week’s screening of Roberto Burchielli’s La scelta di Catia: 80 miglia a sud di Lampedusa (The Choice of Catia. 80 Miles South of Lampedusa) at the Regency Theater in San Juan Capistrano was a good example of how established community groups, governmental agencies like the Italian Institute of Culture, and academia can come together to provide quality cultural experiences to a broader audience. The screening of Burchielli’s thoughtful documentary, which proved both joyful and moving, was followed by a lively discussion on migration, female leadership, and filmmaking.
