Last week’s screening of Roberto Burchielli’s La scelta di Catia: 80 miglia a sud di Lampedusa (The Choice of Catia. 80 Miles South of Lampedusa) at the Regency Theater in San Juan Capistrano was a good example of how established community groups, governmental agencies like the Italian Institute of Culture, and academia can come together to provide quality cultural experiences to a broader audience. The screening of Burchielli’s thoughtful documentary, which proved both joyful and moving, was followed by a lively discussion on migration, female leadership, and filmmaking.
