Nitrogenase catalyzes following reaction:<\/p>\n<p>N<sub>2<\/sub> + 16 ATP + 16 e\u00af\u00a0+ 8 H<sup>+<\/sup> \u2192 2 NH<sub>3<\/sub> + H<sub>2<\/sub> + 16 ADP + 16 P<sub>i<\/sub><\/p>\n<p>This reaction is very important to agriculture since the product, ammonia (NH<sub>3<\/sub>), is a growth limiting plant nutrient. How does the bacterium maintain nitrogenase activity?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For more information, please click <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.chapman.edu\/owenslab\/owenslab\/research-overview\/bioinorganic\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<h4>Protein engineering for the food industry<\/h4>\n<p>The goal of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.chapman.edu\/owenslab\/owenslab\/research-overview\/bioinorganic\/protein-engineering-for-the-food-industry\/\">protein engineering project<\/a> is to develop enzymes that are used to upcycle sunflower meal. Sunflower meal is a byproduct of sunflower oil production and usually discarded or used as animal fodder.
