The below summaries of various ESSDS projects were gathered from the papers and information presented under the Website Development tab in the lab’s Microsoft Teams page.

CALIFORNIA DROUGHT PROJECTIONS

Using recurrent neural networks, the complex interactions between long-term trends in dryness and short but intense periods of wetness due to El Niño were able to be studied, bringing additional understanding to drought projections to California industries and communities.

CHANGE DETECTION IN PACIFIC CORAL REEFS

Study that combined machine learning and remote sensing to determine the change of coral reefs across six different locations, increasing scientific understanding of the coral reefs’ temporal change.

RED SEA NET PRIMARY PRODUCTIVITY STUDY

Biogeochemical cycle study of Marine Primary Productivity and how these organisms’ rate of creating organic compounds can contribute to climate processes, and affect fisheries and marine ecology systems.

MANGROVE CHANGES OVER WEST ARABIAN GULF

Change analysis study on Mangroves habitat including mapping and understanding new distribution trends of mangroves across the Western Arabian Gulf, and how these new Mangrove distributions have made Mangrove detection overall more accurate.
